What is Umalusi?

Umalusi is the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training. It is a statutory body established by the General and Further Education and Training Quality Assurance Act No 58 of 2001 [as amended]. Umalusi’s mandate is to set and monitor standards for general and further education and training qualifications on the General and Further Education and Training Qualifications Sub-Framework (GFETQSF) of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

What does Umalusi do?

Umalusi’s main functions are:

  • To develop and manage a sub-framework of qualifications for general and further education and training.
  • To quality assure qualifications and curricula on the sub-framework.
  • To quality assure assessment at exit points of qualifications on the sub-framework.
  • To accredit private providers of education and training as well as private assessment bodies to offer tuition and/or assessment for qualification(s) on the sub-framework.
  • To issue certificates to learners who have achieved qualifications on the sub-framework.
  • To monitor, report on and improve the quality of provision and assessment within its sub-framework.
  • To advise the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation on matters relating to its sub-framework.

What are the main programmes of Umalusi?

Umalusi consists of the following main programmes and units:

  • Qualifications, Curriculum and Certification: responsible for developing, maintaining and reviewing qualifications, curricula and certification policies on the sub-framework.
  • Quality Assurance of Assessment: responsible for ensuring that assessment at exit points of qualifications on the sub-framework is valid, fair, reliable and credible.
  • Evaluation and Accreditation: responsible for accrediting private providers of education and training as well as private assessment bodies to offer tuition and/or assessment for qualification(s) on the sub-framework.
  • Statistical Information and Research: responsible for providing statistical information and research support to inform Umalusi’s quality assurance functions.
  • Corporate Services: responsible for providing administrative, financial, human resource, information technology, communication and legal services to Umalusi.
