What is SAQA?

SAQA is the South African Qualifications Authority. It is a statutory body established by the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Act No 67 of 2008. SAQA’s mandate is to advance the objectives of the NQF, oversee the further development and implementation of the NQF, and co-ordinate the three sub-frameworks that comprise the NQF 1.

What does SAQA do?

SAQA’s main functions are1:

  • To develop and implement policy and criteria for registering qualifications and part-qualifications on the NQF.
  • To develop and implement policy and criteria for recognising professional bodies and registering professional designations on the NQF.
  • To develop and implement policy and criteria for quality assurance of qualifications and part-qualifications on the NQF.
  • To maintain and update an accurate and accessible database of learner achievements on the NQF.
  • To verify learner achievements on request.
  • To conduct research on matters relating to the NQF.
  • To evaluate foreign qualifications and advise on their recognition in South Africa.
  • To advise the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation on matters relating to the NQF.

What are the main programmes of SAQA?

  • Qualifications Registration: responsible for registering qualifications and part-qualifications on the NQF.
  • Professional Body Recognition: responsible for recognising professional bodies and registering professional designations on the NQF.
  • National Learners’ Records Database: responsible for maintaining and updating a database of learner achievements on the NQF.
  • Verification Services: responsible for verifying learner achievements on request.
  • Research: responsible for conducting research on matters relating to the NQF.
  • Evaluation Services: responsible for evaluating foreign qualifications and advising on their recognition in South Africa.
  • Corporate Services: responsible for providing administrative, financial, human resource, information technology, communication and legal services to SAQA.
